British Army AH-64 Apache

Beitrag von Ian Simpson »

Hallo Alles
After seeing lots of other modellers wonderful AH-64 Apache helicopter models I decided to make a British Army version of the old Roco kit. What was supposed to be a nice easy and quick build has turned into a bit of a monster as the version used by the British has changed a lot since the original model came out so rather than have a helicopter that sort of looks like the one in current use I am trying to make it look closer to the real thing.
As you can see in the picture the side of the fuselage has changed a lot from the model and is different on each side and so with a lot of styrene and filler I have tried to create the same look.

I have painted a couple of old Faller pilot figures for placement in the cockpit.

Something that was also poorly modelled in the Roco kit when compared to the real thing is the Chain gun under the fuselage. There is an after market kit which provides a much more detailed barrel but no gun body so I have had to recreate that from scratch as well.

The body of the gun is just styrene carved to look more like the real thing and then I added the support struts from the model as well as a magazine feed _ again just some styrene and a thinly coiled metal wire to represent the control lead.

The wheels on the model are lacking some detail so I have added some extras to them as well. The white styrene parts on the main wheels are wire cutters to prevent snagging.

An error in the assembly of the gun was pointed out to me and so it has been changed.

You are a braver man than I, Gunga Din... ;)

Everytime I pick up one of my Apache kits, I usually put it back on the shelf quite quickly - and I still have about 8 of them (why oh why) after giving away another 5 or so. I will be taking copious notes, especially since a RAF Apache is high on my bucket list after reading the relevant books by "Ed Mace" and Charlotte Madison.

Looking really nice, Ian, I am looking forward to further installments of the saga.

Cheers,

Jens O.

Thanks Jens
So what was meant as a simple build and paint just keeps getting more complicated. I had hoped to recreate the scene with some British Marines riding on the outside of the helicopter from Afghanistan but the rotor is giving me lots of headaches over trying to make it rotate smoothly.
Anyway I have made some more progress with some of the sensors and handles which you can see in the pictures but there are still plenty more to make - they are just bits of styrene carved and sanded to have a passing resemblance to the real thing.

Getting closer to finishing all the little jobs. Tail rotor is assembled and the Flare/Chaff (not sure which it is) has been drilled out. Sorry but could only drill 6 holes not the 8 on the original!

It has got to the point where the model is pretty much finished for good or bad. It has become harder to work on with all the extra pieces attached as there are fewer places to hold the model safely and so I shall move onto the painting stage sometime over the weekend.
